This half term our topic is 'Africa'. We will begin the half term looking at African animals including elephants, giraffes, rhinos and cheetahs. The pupils will be encouraged to use adjectives to describe their favourite animal. When looking at the story Handa's surprise, the pupils will get the opportunity to learn about and taste different African fruits. We will be trying to sequencing the story and retell the story within literacy. The rest of the half term will focus on learning about the African way of life by looking at dress, dance and music. We will be using a variety of stories to help engage and enthuse pupils in the topic including 'The Lion inside' and 'Ronald the Rhino'.

Maths this half term will begin with introducing the concept of sharing amounts. Pupils will be taught how to share out different amounts using a simple division number sentence. Within number, we will also be learning how to count in 2's, 5's and 10's.

Shape, space and measure will focus on securing skills previously taught so that children are able to use these skills independently. These skills are: using money, measuring weight/length/capacity and measuring time. Most maths activities will be linked to our class topic 'Africa' to help ensure cross-curricular and in-depth learning takes place.

Phonics will continue to be taught within focused groups each morning. Each lesson provides pupils with the opportunity to practise their letter formation, read decodable green words and will begin to read and write short sentences. Most children will be moving on to set 2 sounds. The focus for all groups this half term will be on independent writing. Information about our phonics programme Read Write Inc can be found by pressing the tab at the top of this page.

At the end of the half term, pupils will be moving on to Year 1. Throughout their last few weeks we will be reflecting on our time in Reception and starting to get Year 1 ready. This can be a difficult transition for some children so we will be doing a lot of transition work with the children to try and ease any worries. Pupils will be invited to share their favourite memories of the year and we will be recognising and celebrating all the achievements that they have made!

Keep an eye on our class page for photos and information about the exciting things your children have been getting up to in Reception! :-)
