Reception 2018 - 2019

Miss Harvey

Welcome to St Gerard's Reception page!

This half term our class topic will be 'Me, Myself and I'.  This topic will focus on the children getting to know each other and becoming more comfortable in their new classroom environment.  We will be learning all about our families and how to be a good friend to others.  We will be reading a range of different stories to help with our understanding of difference and diversity.  Throughout this topic, children will take part in numerous activities within continuous provision.  Activities will be set at each area of the classroom for the children to explore and access independently.

Maths will focus on basic number recognition and one-to-one counting.  We will be using a range of concrete resources as well as playing a range of board games and interactive games to help strengthen these skills.  Within shape, space and measure, pupils will be learning all about 2D shapes.  Pupils will initially be invited to create patterns and pictures using the 2D shapes. They will then learn the names of various 2D shapes as well as describing their properties.  We will also be using non-standard method to measure length and weight.

Throughout the first half term, pupils will be completing a range of literacy related tasks.  These will focus on the development of fine motor skills in order to strengthen their pencil control when writing.  Pupils will be able to access a range of 'funky fingers' activities each day as well as take part in a daily dough disco session.  Within phonics, pupils will begin to learn Set 1 sounds through our whole-school programme ReadWriteInc.  Pupils will learn a new sound each morning and will practise the formation of this letter.  They will be begin to sort pictures by intial sounds using the sounds they have learnt in phonics.

Your child will be taught RE through our Come and See programme.  This half term our Come and See topic is 'Myself'.  This fits in nicely with our class topic and will allow us to explore ourselves through the eyes of God.  Throughout the 4 week topic, pupils will be encouraged to talk about and recognise all of the things that make them special.  We will be talking about the importance of our names and to recognise that everyone is different but have all been made in the image of God.

Keep an eye on our class page for photos and information about the exciting things your children have been getting up to in Reception! :-)
