This half term our topic is 'Growing'. We will begin the half term looking at how plants grow and we will have a go at growing our own cress. We will be getting a very special delivery during the second week... some eggs that will hatch into fluffy chicks for us to look after! The arrival of our chicks will help the children in the class to develop important skills within the curriculum including observing changes over time and caring for others. A chick investigation area will be set up to give the children opportunities to record and sequence the life cycle of the chick. The rest of the half term will focus on the life cycles of a butterfly and frog. When looking at these life cycles, pupils will be engaged with focused activities within continuous provision which will reflect each life cycle.

Maths this half term will begin with introducing subtraction. We will then move on to solving addition and subtraction number sentences together - being able to use the correct operation based on the symbol. When exploring the life cycle of a butterfly, pupils will be introduced to the concept of doubling and halving using the wings of the butterfly to help us. We will also be revisiting capacity through our role play pond area.

Phonics will continue to be taught within focused groups each morning. Each lesson provides pupils with the opportunity to practise their letter formation, read decodable green words and will begin to read and write short sentences. Most children will be moving on to set 2 sounds. The focus for all groups this half term will be on independent writing. Information about our phonics programme Read Write Inc can be found by pressing the tab at the top of this page.
