In English, during the first half of the term, we will be focusing on two texts, ‘The Jamie Drake Equation' by Christopher Edge. While we read this book, children will be producing stories about faraway fiction. As a class, we will also look at the book, 'A Galaxy of Her Own: Amazing Stories of Women in Space' by Libby Jackson. While looking at this non-fiction text we will focus on report and journalistic writing. Throughout this term we will also look at argument and debate, and reading and learning poems.

We will work on improving our spelling, punctuation and grammar throughout English and other curriculum subjects. Spellings will be given out as homework each week. The children are to practise their spellings for homework so that they are ready for their weekly spelling test, which takes place on Friday.

In Maths this term, we will be focusing on fractions, decimals, percentages and measurement. As well fluency skills, the children will regularly be using their reasoning and problem-solving skills to solve mathematical problems and challenges. Children will be using concrete and abstract resources to support their learning. Children are encouraged not only to practice their arithmetic skills during lessons but in their own time too. Children can access TTRockstars at home and rewards are given to the classes who access the website regularly.

During the whole year all subjects and teaching will reflect the school's Catholic ethos.

During the Spring term, we will be focusing on the theme: Local Church - Community through the topic of 'Mission'. During this topic children will learn about the mission of inspirational leaders. The children will also be looking at, 'Memorial Sacrifice' and understanding the Eucharist as the living memorial of Christ's sacrifice.

During our weekly lessons, there will be lots of opportunities for practical investigations to develop our scientific knowledge. This term, we will be focusing on looking at two topics, 'Earth and Space' and 'Forces - Effects on Movement'. By the end of the term, we will be able to distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made and describe its properties and identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal.

P.E- The children will have P.E on a Monday afternoon each week. Please make sure that your child brings in their P.E kit for this.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. This will consist of spellings, Maths and relevant activities (linking to what we have been learning).

Please encourage your child to read at home three times a week; this is important to their overall progress. Please sign your child's reading diary at least three times per week. We monitor reading at home every day and children are rewarded for reading consistently.

Please check the school website, twitter and newsletters for any unpcoming events. Please also check the parent app for any trips that your child will be going on. Keep an eye on our school twitter page (@StGerardsWidnes) to see what your child has been up to.

Thank you,

Miss Roberts and Miss McNulty
