Welcome to Class 1!

Our topics this term are 'Under the Sea' and 'Animals'. The children will be learning about the different types of animals such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds and insects. They will also look at the different types of food groups and learn about which animals are omnivores, herbivores and carnivores.

Within English this term, we will be focusing on a variety of different stories that link closely with out topics. We will be reading and exploring books from famous authors such as Julia Donaldson, Benji Davies and Oliver Jeffers and writing out own verison of a sea themed story based on what we have read. We wil also be using our topic of Animals to carry out research using the computers and the internet to then allow us to write our own writing non-chronological reports based upon one animal.

In Maths, during the first half term we will be developing our number, addition and subtraction skills.The children will also be continuing to develop their number skills, regularly counting in 2, 5,10 and using their knowledge of number to solve problems. In the second half term we will  be learning about the different units of measure for length/height, mass, and capacity. They will be recognising and using symbols for pounds and pence and combining these to create particular totals. We will look at a range of 2D and 3D shape, comparing and sorting them according to their properties. Children will be using vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement.


Things to remember:

  • Children should have their book bags in school everyday so we can read with your child.
  • Reading books will be changed once your child has read their book three times.
  • Homework- Homework will be given out on Monday and should be brought back on Friday. The childrens homework will include, spellings, handwriting and times tables practice.
